Children & Church

We welcome you and your children to the Chapel of the Cross.  Children are welcome in all our church services.  Children’s bulletins and illustrated Bibles are available from our ushers.  All who seek God and a deeper knowledge of Christ—including children—are invited to join in Holy Communion. Those who wish to receive a blessing rather than take the bread and wine may cross their arms across their chests.

Please know that you may leave the service at any time if your child needs to walk in the courtyard, get a drink of water or use the bathroom. The closest bathrooms and water fountain are located in the hallway of the Battle building. It is easiest to exit the back, side door through the narthex (Tower Room) and walk through the courtyard to the Battle Bldg. door. Bathrooms are to your left.

Sunday Morning Nursery

Our Sunday Morning Nursery is open from 8:45 AM-12:30 PM. The nursery is located on the 2nd floor of the Yates Building, room 28. If you are visiting for the first time, please complete an information card,  paper-copies are available in the nursery room. On subsequent visits, please sign in.  If you have a cell phone, you may provide your number and set your phone to vibrate in case the nursery staff needs to reach you.

We ask that you help other children stay healthy by keeping your sick child at home. Do not bring your child if he or she has any of the following: an infectious rash, vomiting, intestinal upset or fever within the last 24 hours, an illness that prevents him or her from participating in child care activities or an illness that requires more care than the staff members are able to provide without compromising the needs of the other children in the group.

Children’s Chapel Service

A Children’s Chapel service is held during the 9:00 service for children ages 2 – 7. (During the summer, the service is at 10:00 AM.) Children gather on the playground by the Morehead Planetarium and process to the Chapel at approximately 9:05. In inclement weather, children meet in the activity room on the Ground floor of the new building. Please be aware that there are no diaper changing facilities available during this service. Young children in diapers may be more comfortable in the nursery. If you are visiting for the first time, please fill out an information card, by clicking the gold bar to the right of this page. On subsequent visits, please pull the card from the file box, write the date on the back and place the card in the designated basket. This allows staff members to quickly find you if you are needed. Please see attached map for directions to playground. Holy Communion:  Some parents choose to pick their children up from the Nursery or Children’s Chapel service after the Breaking of the Bread so the family can participate in Holy Communion together. If you do so, please sign your child(ren) out with a staff member (in the nursery). Please enter the Chapel through the back, cloister door.
